Monthly Meeting – Tuesday 11th August 2015
Talk by Tony Jacobs - NCI Calshot - Eyes Along the Coast

Tony Jacobs is a volunteer at Calshot Tower NCI station which he joined in 2010. Most of the coastguard stations were closed in the early 90's. So in 1994 the NCI was formed in order to restore a visual watch along the UK coast in daylight hours 364 days a year, not Christmas Day. It is a charity and has 46 stations around our coastline, including Calshot here in Hampshire. All the volunteers liaise with the RAF and the Coastguard who they report to of any incidences. There are 80 Watchkeepers at Calshot including some women, the oldest being 84! The Tower is 130 ft high with 82 steps. It has a weather station and 5 radio channels, the aim being to spot anyone or a vessel in distress at sea, including kite surfers, jet skiers, dinghies or paddle boarders, yachts and fishing vessels. Last year there were 290 incidents and to date 219.There are 4 NCI stations in the Solent area being Gosport, Lee on the Solent, The Needles and Calshot.

The volunteers are assessed yearly.
