Monthly Meeting – Tuesday 8th March 2016 Talk by RSPCA - "Animal Rescue Centre Fareham"
Annabelle from the RSPCA Stubbington animal shelter gave a very interesting insight into the work carried out there. It is one of the largest shelters in the UK covering approx 1000 sq miles of Hampshire and h elps over 6000 animals a year.
The site has dog play areas, puppy block, 6 dog kennel blocks including one for commercial boarding which is a source of income, 2 catteries, an aviary, rabbit block, ferret runs and a wildlife area with a pond. There are also fields for stock animals. There is an onsite vet's clinic as well as one in Shirley, Southampton.
The centre does not discriminate on species, breed, age or temperament and no time limit for rehoming, usually taking 2-3 months. If some dogs or cats don't settle there, they have voluntary fosterers. There are over 350 volunteers helping with exercising, answering phones, checking homes etc. Daily running costs are over £3,500 relying completely on public funding. They have 3 charity shops with a fourth opening in Shirley. Local shops are generous with food donations.
There are many reasons animals come to us, housing issues, relationship breakups, illness of owners etc. Strays are checked for chipping.
For rehoming the animals are matched up with suitable families as best as possible.
