Report of General Monthly Meeting
July: Councillor Angela Clear - My Time as Mayor of Winchester
Angela Clear said that it had been a great honour to be the 816th Mayor of Winchester during her year of office 2015/6 and that the Mayor was second in precedence only to the Mayor of London.
Her main role had been to carry out the civic duties for Winchester & District which comprised an area of some 250 sq miles. She had been a District Councillor for some years and had in 2014/5 been voted by the full council into the role of Deputy Mayor. Her official residence was at Abbey House which had been built in about 1700 and was sited in the Broadway. Being Mayor was essentially a full time job and she was fortunate to be able to have the support of Peter as her husband and escort. During her year of office she carried out some 4/5 engagements a day. These included many functions in the Cathedral and the Great Hall and also charitable events and fetes including the hospital on Christmas Day. She had also chaired 9 full Council Meetings including those concerned with the controversial development of Silver Hill. In total she had fulfilled 567 engagements during her year of office.
In her role she also helped to raise money for her chosen cancer charities particularly Countess Mountbatten, Rowans Hospice and Naomi House all of which benefitted by some £10,000 each.
She concluded by saying it had been a very busy and rewarding year and a privilege that she would not have wanted to miss.
