Had you been at Southampton Station on the afternoon of 10th February 1966 you might have heard the following announcement:-

“The train standing on Platform 1 is the 16.06 to Fawley; calling at Millbrook, Redbridge, Totton, Marchwood, Hythe, Handley Halt and Fawley.”

Little would you have realised it would be over 51 years before another train made this journey! Thus it was that members of the Railway Group caught a special train in May along the closed line to the Fawley Oil Refinery and back – cheered on by waving crowds of spectators at level crossings and other vantage points – all hoping no doubt that a regular service could be reinstated. Given that the track; infrastructure; signalling; and Marchwood station are still intact – plus the rapid growth of the Waterside conurbation – it seemed to us the benefit would considerably outweigh the relatively low cost.
