On a glorious day in early October members of the Railway Group enjoyed a memorable visit to the Great Cockcrow Railway at Chertsey.

Alan Phillips astride his engine, which he built himself,
at the Great Cockcrow Railway

This is a miniature railway [7 1/2 inch gage] designed like the real thing. It has a profusion of junctions; points; crossovers; viaducts and tunnels - it is fully track circuited with an array of both semaphore and colour light signals. Indeed the signalmen at the boxes we visited were so busy dealing with all the trains they had little time to talk

We were fortunate to be treated as VIP’s as one of our members, Alan Phillips, was driving his own engine and was able to give us all a ride on his train. The photograph, taken by Derek Reynolds, shows Alan astride his engine which took him 7 years to build.

It is a superb scale model of BR Standard Class 2 Mogul 2-6-0 locomotive No. 78004 which he named “White Cloud”.

The engine has already been driven several hundreds of miles on suitable tracks in the UK and all over Europe

Our visit also included a guided tour of the extensive engine sheds where we were amazed at the sheer number of cae models of different types of locos – an enthusiasts paradise.

I can thoroughly recommend a visit by any Branch member next summer – particularly if you have grandchildren!

Their web site gives details of opening times and directions.
